All About PRINCE2® Certification

PRINCE2® certification is basically a project management framework. PRINCE2® is a de-facto standard method that has been endorsed by the UK government as the project management standard for public projects. It is a registered trademark of OGC. PRINCE2® is a process-driven project management methodology which contrasts with reactive/adaptive methods such as Scrum. PRINCE2® is also used to refer to the training and accreditation of authorized practitioners who undertake accredited qualifications to obtain certification. PRINCE2® encompasses the ideologies of management, control and organization of a project. PRINCE2® can be tailored to the needs of a particular project.

PRINCE2® is a well thought-out approach to project management and provides a method for managing projects within a clearly defined framework. PRINCE2® certification illustrates procedures to coordinate people and activities in a project, how to design and supervise the project, and what to do if the project has gone beyond the tolerance set and hence needs to be adjusted. The method is non-proprietary, which means that anybody is free to use it. The method is controlled by an accreditation scheme administered by APMG, the company assigned by the OGC earlier and now by UK Cabinet Office to certify PRINCE2 professionals and PRINCE2 trainers.

Derivation & History:

PRINCE2® has been derived from a combination of an earlier method called PROMPTII and from the PRINCE project management method, which was initially developed in 1989 by the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) as a UK Government standard for information systems (IT) project management. However, it soon became regularly applied outside the purely IT environment and a generic project management method was released in 1996. PRINCE2’s increasingly popularity has made it a de facto standard for project management in the UK and worldwide (with a strong presence in Europe, Australia, and other typically English-speaking countries outside North America.)

Since 2006, the method has been fundamentally revised to adapt to the ever changing macro and micro environment and a new version was launched as "PRINCE2:2009 Refresh" in 2009. The new version comes alongside with two manuals, mainly 'Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 - 2009 Edition', and 'Directing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 - 2009 Edition'.

Around the world, exams are administered by the APM Group and the accreditation is earned by passing the two exams namely – the Foundation and the Practitioner.
  • PRINCE2® Foundation level is for those aspirants with a requirement to learn the basics and terminology of PRINCE2.
  • PRINCE2® Practitioner is the highest level qualification and is appropriate for those with the need to manage projects within a PRINCE2 environment.

It is beneficial to master PRINCE2® and consider using it as the core of your company’s new project management approach. PRINCE2® certification is an invaluable asset in ones career as it increases employment prospects and helps individuals do their jobs more effectively, becoming an advantage to their employers.

Project management is a modern career that is so generic it is applicable to any business sector. The presence of PRINCE2® certification has now become a minimum requirement for many CVs. For many, the certificate is a career-changing opportunity that leads to project management or consultancy work in one of the large UK or international government or non-government organizations.
